Big Shoulders was drawn for a city. Patric King of XO Type Co made it for the Chicago Design System, where it serves as the primary typeface, the single voice Chicago uses to identify itself and its citizens. The tall, condensed American Gothic shapes draw on Chicago’s history in railway transport and public political action, and on its dance floors as well.
The wider superfamily spells those strands out. Big Shoulders Stencil covers Chicago’s histories of work and protest. Big Shoulders Inline borrows its striped letters from House parties thrown by Black Chicagoans and from LGBTQ dance events, a scene active since the early 1980s.
This is the plain core of it, 9 weights from Thin to Black, with small caps, fractions, a stylistic set and Vietnamese support among 719 characters. It is narrow and made for headlines. We would set it in capitals on a transit poster or a protest placard, and keep the Thin for very big sizes only.
