The letters of Chokokutai look as if someone had carved them into wood chips or slabs of stone, and the name, written 彫刻体, points that way too. Font Zone 108, the pen name of a designer who works mainly on Japanese fonts, calls it funky, and that is fair.
There are no kanji in it. You get 83 hiragana, 86 katakana, Latin letters and figures in full width and half width, Google’s Latin Plus set, and more than 147 symbols. So it suits a title or a sign written in kana, and anything with kanji needs a second font beside it.
The designer gives these fonts away in the hope of keeping the beauty of Japanese lettering alive for later generations. Chokokutai came to Google Fonts in December 2020, on the same day as Font Zone 108’s Potta One and a handful of other Japanese display faces.
