ISO/IEC 29500, the Office Open XML standard, is the reason Lunasima exists. It belongs to DocRepair, a set of fonts meant to help such documents comply with the standard, and its particular job is Lucida Grande: when a file asks for that font and the machine does not have it, Lunasima steps in with metrics close enough that the text barely reflows.
Under the hood it is Noto Sans, refitted. That inheritance brings a wide script range, 1,937 characters per style across Latin, Greek, Cyrillic and Hebrew with Vietnamese, in a Regular and a Bold. It first appeared in March 2023 and reached Google Fonts that June, credited to The DocRepair Project and Google.
We would install it as insurance for incoming documents. For a new design, start from Noto Sans itself.
