Every academic year about 12 students at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino pick up Titillium where the last group left it, fix what is broken and push it further. It started as a teaching project in the type design course of the Campi Visivi master’s in visual design, meant from the start as a collective font, and 3 years in, the people running it said they did not know what it would turn into.
Luciano Perondi handled design and curation, Marcello Signorile coordinated, Manuel Zanettin supervised the web side, and Diego Giusti drew the first prototype. The school invited outside designers to join in or build their own variants, and asked anyone using it to send in examples for a database of case histories.
What came out is a sans with a wide range of weights: Extra Light, Light, Regular, Semi Bold and Bold, each with an italic, plus a Black. The italics run noticeably narrower than the romans.
On a website it suits headings and navigation, and in Light it has a cool, clean look for a university or a tech conference.
