Verses from the Mindoro hills
Hanunoo is written upward. Its columns climb from bottom to top and are then read from left to right, an unusual layout for any script. It has been used in the mountains of Mindoro, in the southern Philippines, since about 1300, for the Hanunó’o language, which has some 18,000 speakers.
The Noto version is a plain sans by the Monotype Design Team, covering the 31 characters of the Hanunoo Unicode block with Latin added and 1 stylistic set. 1 Regular style; Google Fonts took it in 2020. The script needs software support for complex text layout, so set it in an app that handles shaping.
