Intel no longer maintains Clear Sans. The project has been discontinued: no more maintenance, and no patches accepted. The files are version 1.00, from 2012, and there is a fair amount to like in them.
Daniel Ratighan drew the family at Monotype, under the direction of the user experience team at Intel’s Open Source Technology Center, and the brief was legibility on screens: characters cut down to unambiguous forms, with interface design as the main target. Intel offered it to anyone building software, operating systems included. Monotype’s design files were never published, so it cannot be rebuilt from source.
The weights are a slightly lopsided set. Thin, Light, Regular, Medium and Bold in roman, italics only for Regular, Medium and Bold.
Latin, Greek and Cyrillic with Vietnamese, kerning and standard ligatures, 816 characters. We would use it for interface text and documentation at modest sizes, and save the Thin for large type.
