Alata’s capitals and its lowercase come from different places. Spyros Zevelakis took the capitals from British lettering, while the small letters lean continental European, and the pair is held together by low contrast and geometric construction. Behind both sit 2 older sources: poster lettering from the early 20th century, and the monoline letters cut into Greek inscriptions.
Monumental, serious, a little archaic, and now and then eccentric. That is how its makers sum it up, and it fits a heading better than a paragraph.
Eben Sorkin took the design on in 2018, refining it and widening the language support, and Sorkin Type publishes it. The single Regular has 893 characters. For a 1-style font the figures are well stocked: old style and lining, tabular and proportional, superiors and fractions, plus case sensitive forms that lift punctuation for all-caps settings.
