The Latin in Kantumruy Pro is borrowed. It comes from Work Sans, adjusted in width and weight to sit next to the Khmer, and the Khmer is where Tep Sovichet’s attention went.

The first Kantumruy came out in 2013 as a modern display Khmer face, and Cambodian brands large and small picked it up, as did a good number of non-profit organizations for their identities. The Pro version, made with Wei Huang, keeps that direction and changes what is underneath: new vertical metrics and proportions, some letterforms redrawn, and an italic set added to the family.

So there are now 14 styles, 7 weights from Thin to Bold, each with its italic. The italic holds almost exactly the width of the roman, which helps when an English book title in italic drops into a Khmer sentence and you do not want the paragraph to reflow.

Kerning, and little else, in the OpenType tables.

On a bilingual NGO site our first try would be Regular for body and Semi Bold for headings.
