Olivia King, a designer in Australia, had been working with disability not-for-profits and government clients when she read Sofie Beier’s book Reading Letters: Designing for Legibility. Inclusive Sans came out of those 2 things. She started the Regular in early 2021, during a 10-week type course run by Troy Leinster, and had most of the Latin drawn by that August. It was her first major type release.
The friendly feel of today’s neo-grotesques is the starting point. The legibility work sits in the details:
- I, l and 1 are clearly split apart, and O and 0 are distinct
- b, d, p and q are each drawn on their own, none a mirror copy of another
- c, o, a and e have open counters, the x-height is tall, and the default spacing is a little wider than usual
Working on Gadigal Country in Sydney, King also added 48 glyphs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages, with Vincent Chan, in consultation with Sasha Wilmouth of the University of Melbourne.
The download has 5 weights from Light to Bold, each with an italic, and the italics keep the same width as the romans, so switching to italic for a word doesn’t reflow a line. For a public service website or a health form, text that every reader has to get through, we would start here.
