Frode Helland, a Norwegian designer, drew General Sans for Indian Type Foundry as a rationalist sans, and the mood he was after is France in the 1950s, tidy forms with some life left in them. The apertures are very small, so the counters feel almost enclosed.
A few details give it away:
- a G with no spur
- a Q whose tail drops straight down
- circular dots
- a wide f and a wide t
The default figures sit a touch short, and the case feature swaps in cap-height figures for all-caps lines. 3 stylistic sets hold further alternates, enough to build a wordmark without opening a vector tool.
The file on this page is the Regular, on Fontshare since March 2021. ITF pitches it at branding and lifestyle editorial work, and a magazine masthead or a shop identity would suit it.
