On the old shop signs of the Montserrat neighborhood in Buenos Aires the underline was often built into the lettering itself, joined to the letters. Montserrat Underline brings that back. It is the third member of the Montserrat project, next to the normal family and the Alternates.
Julieta Ulanovsky started the project to rescue the posters and signs of her neighborhood from the first half of the 20th century, lettering that redevelopment is wiping out for good. Sol Matas, Juan Pablo del Peral and Jacques Le Bailly worked on it with her.
Everything else is full Montserrat, which means a lot of family:
- 18 styles, Thin to Black, every weight with an italic, in Latin with Vietnamese plus Cyrillic
- small caps, old style figures, tabular figures, fractions and discretionary ligatures
So you can set a storefront name in Underline and the rest of the sign in plain Montserrat without the letters drifting apart. Use it sparingly. On 1 or 2 words, a logo or a menu heading, the built-in line is charming; across a paragraph it would turn into noise.
