Out of the box, Cal Sans sets its letters so close they nearly touch, and Mark Davis did that on purpose. He made the face for the headlines of Cal.com, the scheduling company founded by Peer Richelsen and Bailey Pumfleet, and wanted a big title to come out tight with no tracking at all. Go down to a subheading and you add the letter spacing yourself. His reasoning is that loosening a tight design keeps the texture even, while squeezing a loose one never quite does.
The design began as Davis asking himself what his own Futura would be. Richelsen’s brief wanted something serious and geometric, with the letters of “cal.com” round all the way through.
Futura comes back in the OpenType features.
The 3 sets
- ss01 swaps in Futura-style alternates, 48 of them once the accented letters are counted
- ss02 does the same and also merges eligible letters into Futura’s historical ligatures
- ss03 replaces the kerning between consecutive diagonals so their corners are allowed to crash
There are also 6 character variants, for C and c, j, t, u, 0 and 1, an idea Davis credits to Rasmus Andersson’s Inter.
It reached Google Fonts in March 2025 as 1 Regular, 547 characters with Vietnamese, proportional and tabular figures. We would keep it above 32 px. Below that the default spacing starts to crowd, and you will be adding tracking to every subheading.
