Ysabeau SC does 1 thing to Christian Thalmann’s Ysabeau: it takes the small capitals and freezes them into the default letters. Type in lowercase and small caps come out, with no feature to switch on, which helps in software that never offered a small caps button.
The parent family has an unusual idea behind it. Thalmann started from the letterforms of the Garamond tradition and pared them down to a crisp, low-contrast sans, keeping the wide stride and long extenders of the book face. He suggests EB Garamond or Cormorant as partners, and the SC cut is where that pairing earns its keep, as running heads and section labels over a Garamond text.
9 weights, Thin 100 to Black 900, added to Google Fonts in June 2023. The 1,012 characters take in Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese, with math and symbol sets on top.
Figures come in both old style and lining forms, a choice small caps settings need: old style to sit low with the small capitals, lining when a number should stand at full height. There is a slashed zero as well, with 4 stylistic sets and discretionary ligatures.
At text sizes, open the letterspacing a little.
