Sulphur Point is a stretch of port and marina in Tauranga, New Zealand, and Dale Sattler’s typeface began as a study of it. He was looking at theories of how space gets produced politically, in the working docks and the recreational boat facilities side by side, and the letters came out of that thinking.

What you get is a geometric sans that stays close to pure geometry. Sattler made only small optical adjustments away from the circle and the straight line, kept the contrast in the stems low, and pulled the ascenders and descenders in short, which leaves a big x-height. The family runs to Light, Regular and Bold.

He meant it for display and for copy. In text we would give it a little extra leading, since that big x-height fills up the line; as a heading face it is crisp and plain.
