Yanone put out Kaffeesatz in 2004. It was his first finished typeface, and by his own account he had little confidence and not much knowledge of the type scene then. Publishing it anyway turned out to be 1 of the best decisions he ever made.
The Bold has the air of 1920s coffee house lettering, while the thin weights carry it toward the present. All of it is very condensed, so a long word fits a narrow space.
And it traveled. Yanone counts over 100,000 downloads, and the font has turned up on promos in Dubai malls, on McDonald’s ads in New Zealand, on German gyms, and on a great deal of coffee packaging, food packaging and café design around the world.
In 2009 he reworked much of it for FontShop’s FontFont Library, where it became FF Kava, and Yves Peters wrote about the change at length on FontFeed. The version here gained Cyrillic in December 2013, drawn by Sol Matas and Juan Pablo del Peral at HT Fonts.
6 weights, Extra Light to Bold, with stylistic alternates, 5 stylistic sets and discretionary ligatures, plus Vietnamese. We would still put it on a coffee bag before anything else.
