Rooftops after the rain

Santiago Orozco first met Empire in an architecture book in his college library, while doing his homework there. Empire was a tall, tight condensed face that American Type Founders issued in 1937, and Dorsa is his reading of it, slightly less squeezed than the original so it would work for titles.

Empire never had a lowercase. Orozco studied skyline-style typefaces and drew one from scratch, starting with an o that is not quite geometric: it swells outward, and its white space stays the same through the design. Every other letter was built on modules taken from that o. The f was drawn so it never runs into an accent, and the A keeps a traditional peak because he thought it read better that way.

It is very narrow, and a word in it takes not much more than a third of the width Arial would need. Orozco’s own advice is to open the letter spacing, and he is right, since set tight the stems crowd each other.
