Wael Morcos and Khajag Apelian drew the Arabic for IBM Plex, the corporate family Mike Abbink started at IBM BX&D with the Dutch foundry Bold Monday around a theme the company has leaned on since the turn of the century, people and machines. Plex grew a Sans, a Condensed, a Mono and a Serif first, and branches for other scripts after that.
The Latin comes built into every weight, so the Arabic has to sit beside a grotesque that is neutral and a little friendly and look like it belongs to the same family. That is what a branch like this is for, a bilingual page in 1 voice.
7 weights, Thin at 100 to Bold at 700, and no italics.
The feature list is long for a corporate face: 6 stylistic sets, contextual and stylistic alternates, fractions, a slashed zero. On a dashboard or a bank statement that flips between Arabic and English we would set the labels in Medium and the body in Regular, and the 2 scripts should hold together without help.
