Every Yi sign is built from 5 basic strokes: a dot, a horizontal, a vertical, an arch and a circle. Out of those come all the syllables of Modern Yi (its own name is ꆈꌠꁱꂷ), the script some 2 million people use to write Nuosu in the Liangshan Yi region of China. It runs left to right today, while the traditional way was vertical and read from the right. Written records reach back about 500 years, and some believe the script may be as old as 5,000.

Noto Sans Yi gives it a plain, unmodulated drawing, credited to Monotype’s design team for Google’s Noto project, with a Latin alphabet alongside for names, numbers and mixed text.
