Encode Sans comes in 5 widths, from Condensed through Semi Condensed and Normal to Semi Expanded and Expanded, and each width has the same 9 weights. That makes 45 fonts cut from 1 design. Semi Expanded is 1 step out from the middle, a touch broader than the Normal.
The first drawings were by Pablo Impallari and Andres Torresi, and Google’s credit adds Jacques Le Bailly. The idea was a workhorse, a sans that could take on whatever a project asked of it, and the feature list backs that up:
- small caps, reached from lowercase or from capitals
- old style, lining, tabular and proportional figures
- fractions, superscripts and subscripts
- case sensitive forms for all-caps settings
Where would we use this width? On a wide screen or a landscape slide, where a normal sans can look a little cramped, and for subheads above body text set in the Normal width of the same family. Weights run from Thin at 100 to Black at 900.
