Hauora Sans began as a font for a university project. WCYS took Manrope, the open sans by Mikhail Sharanda, and reworked it for Tiaki Hauora, a BE(Hons) research project by Preet Patel and Marc Burgess at the University of Auckland’s engineering faculty. The result is described as semi-condensed, clean and minimal, with geometric digits.
For a project font, the OpenType list is long:
- case-sensitive forms and an automatic apostrophe
- contextual alternates and standard ligatures, including ligatures that turn words into icons
- tabular figures for columns of numbers, alongside proportional ones
- fractions, ordinals, superscripts and subscripts
7 weights, ExtraLight 200 to ExtraBold 800, with no italics. The 677 characters cover Latin with Vietnamese, Greek and Cyrillic, and WCYS & Co. dates it to 2020. A variable version exists in the repository next to these static files.
Would we use it for a long article? Probably not, with no italics to lean on. A dashboard or an app where tabular figures matter is a better fit.
