The edges are the thing. Gemunu Libre’s Sinhala letters have a smooth, square finish, worked out while Mooniak and Pushpananda Ekanayake redrew every character for web and screen use. Their starting point was FM Gemunu, an established Sinhala typeface, and Gemunu Libre is its Unicode-compliant successor.
The redraw also opened things up, giving the letters bigger counters and smoother, more even curves. Sol Matas drew the Latin to match. Google Fonts funded the initial development and release in 2015.
There are 7 weights, Extra Light to Extra Bold, and each carries the complete Sinhala script with its Latin partner. It sets narrow. We would put the heavier weights on Sinhala headlines and posters, where the square finish shows best, and use the Regular for interface text.
