During her years as a Silicon Valley educational therapist, Bonnie Shaver-Troup began changing the spacing between letters in her students’ reading assignments. Students with dyslexia and other reading problems read better and understood more. Her conclusion, which she states plainly, is that most reading problems are visual or perceptual, and that the fonts we hand readers are fitted too tight.
Lexend came out of that: 7 families developed with what she calls the Shaver-Troup Formulations, offered much as prescription glasses are, so a reader can find a fit. Deca is 1 of them, and its letters stand well apart. A line in Lexend Deca runs about 11% longer than the same words in Arial.
Thomas Jockin drew the type with her, and Santiago Orozco, Héctor Gómez and Superunion share the credit. In June 2021 Font Bureau upgraded every Lexend family to variable, with weights from Thin to Black, and this download has all 9 as static files.
Does it help every reader? We cannot promise that. Shaver-Troup puts the blame on the font, and for teaching materials, reading apps and long screen text it is an easy family to try.
