The 16 in the name is the grid. DotGothic16 is Fontworks’ outline version of an old 16 by 16 Gothic bitmap font, the style of lettering that once lived in old video games and on cell phones and computer screens, and it carries that pixel feel over into print and modern displays.
It reads well for a bitmap design, and pixel art has brought it a lot of new fans lately. The single Regular is large, 8,231 characters, covering Japanese kana and kanji as well as Latin, Greek and Cyrillic, with a slashed zero for scores and codes.
For a Japanese indie game or a T-shirt with a retro screen joke, this is the one we’d pick. It came to Google Fonts in 2020.
