Lexend never had small caps. Lextrall adds them, through both smcp and c2sc, together with old-style figures, and that is the reason the fork exists: Luka Leer, who goes by Mahtaran, released it through Amuzil in September 2023 to make Lexend more useful in modern layouts.
The family tree behind it is longer than most:
- 2008, Andrew Paglinawan starts Quicksand.
- 2016, Thomas Jockin improves Quicksand and adapts it for low-proficiency readers, readers with dyslexia among them.
- 2018, Bonnie Shaver-Troup and Jockin release Lexend, built on her Individually Optimal Text Formation Factors.
- 2021, Font Bureau gives Lexend a weight axis, Thin to Black.
Lextrall keeps all 9 of those weights as static files, without italics, and its Latin covers Vietnamese. Besides the new features there is a slashed zero, fractions, ordinals and 1 stylistic set.
Would we use it for body text? In reports and teaching material, yes, where old-style figures sit quietly inside sentences and small caps let an acronym through without shouting.
