Maḏnḥāyā, in 9 weights. Noto Sans Syriac Eastern draws the Eastern form of the Syriac script with even, unmodulated strokes, from Thin at 100 up to Black at 900.
Syriac is a Middle Eastern abjad written right to left, attested as early as 6 CE. It carried Aramaic and Neo-Aramaic across West Asia, and Turoyo, also called Surayt, and today its main home is the Syrian church. Letters join and change shape with their neighbors, so the font leans on contextual alternates and localized forms and needs software with complex text layout; without that the letters will not connect.
Monotype produced it for Google’s Noto collection, and a small Latin set comes along for mixed lines.
Our pick for running text would be Regular or Medium. Leave Thin for big headings, where its hairline strokes have the room they need.
