Finland has an official typeface, and this is it. The Prime Minister’s Office and Business Finland commissioned it to promote Finnish exports, and Niklas Ekholm, Juho Hiilivirta and Jaakko Suomalainen of Helsinki Type Studio drew it.
The brief leaned on sisu, the Finnish idea of honest, stubborn determination, and the letters answer with strong, compressed shapes. Look at the joins. The ink traps are deep notches, cut in so hard that the designers compare them to the work of a blunt ax, and they keep the joins open when the type is small while giving a big headline something to grip on.
The studio’s own comparison is the Finnhorse, a breed that can be ridden or put to work. Fair enough: it carries a trade fair banner and a footnote with the same set of files.
There are 8 styles, Regular, Medium, Semi Bold and Bold, each with its italic, covering Latin and Cyrillic, with tabular figures, fractions and superscripts. Would we use it outside Finland? Yes, for anything that wants to sound direct, though a Finnish brand will get the most out of the story.
