Truculenta takes its cue from mid-century lettering, the hand-drawn kind, and then bends it a little. Ivan Castro and Eva Sanz designed it with the Omnibus-Type team as a grotesque on the irregular side, letters that do not quite line up with each other the way a strict sans would.
The original is a variable font with 3 axes, weight, width and optical size. The download on this page cuts the weight range into 9 static styles, Thin to Black, at the default width, which already runs on the narrow side.
Omnibus names packaging, branding, book covers, illustrated editions and film titles as its territory, and that list is fair. A jar label or the title card of a short film is exactly where its quirks pay off. For text, the figure set is better than a quirky display face usually gets, with old style and lining numerals, tabular figures and a slashed zero.
