Thick where the eye expects thin: the contrast in this humanist sans runs backwards. Its name comes from the French martial art, and Max Esnée wanted it to carry that sense of motion, with open curves and wide gestures.
This release is a complete redraw. The first Savate came out in 2016 from the We.ch collective, Esnée with Hadrien Bulliat, through Velvetyne; the new 1, from Plomb Type, refines every glyph and spreads the family over 16 styles, Extra Light to Black, all with italics. Language support grew as well, and the 906 characters now take in Latin Pan-African and Greek.
Old style figures and 2 stylistic sets are in there too. The pitch runs from bold headlines to readable text, but we’d trust it with headlines and pull quotes first. Reverse contrast in long paragraphs is an acquired taste.
