Khaled Hosny took the road signs around Cairo as his model for Mada. The Arabic is geometric and unmodulated, with low descenders, open contours and very little contrast, traits that suit signage and serve small sizes and user interfaces too. It can also go big, as a display face with a plain, modernist feel.
For the Latin, Hosny borrowed Source Sans Pro, the Adobe Type family led by Paul D. Hunt, and modified it slightly to sit with the Arabic.
There are 8 weights, ExtraLight at 200 to Black at 900, and 3 stylistic sets.
We like it for bilingual apps and websites in Egypt and elsewhere in the Arab world, where the 2 scripts have to share a button or a menu.
