Pronounced with a soft g
Open a bilingual dictionary and look at the pronunciation after each headword, the string of IPA symbols in brackets. That little stretch of type is what Ana Paula Megda and Pablo Ugerman set out to redraw with Voces. Dictionary setting brings 2 problems with it, as they put it: spatial economy and fidelity in print.
Their answers are visible in the letters. The x-height is large and the ascenders and descenders short, which packs lines closer without the small letters shrinking. Counters are kept generous. Ink traps are cut into the joins, for the press as much as for the look. And the strokes swell gradually along their length.
Voces was picked for the Tipos Latinos exhibition in 2010. It comes in 1 Regular style with 669 characters, and the phonetic set is the reason to download it; for a language course, a glossary or any page full of transcriptions, it is a solid pick.
