Dark mode was on somebody’s mind. The variable Google Sans that Google publishes has a grade axis next to weight and optical size, and grade makes the letters render lighter or darker while every glyph keeps exactly the same width. Light text on a dark surface can be thinned a hair, and not a single line reflows.
Optical size settles an older split. There used to be Google Sans for display and Google Sans Text for small sizes, 2 separate families, and the axis now flips between those designs at 18 pt and up and 17 pt and below. The files offered here are the static styles: Regular, Medium, Semi Bold and Bold, each with its italic, 8 in all.
What surprised us is the reach. This is the current generation of Google’s brand typeface, so it has to work wherever Google’s products go, and the character set shows it, 3,281 characters over Latin, Greek and Cyrillic plus Armenian, Hebrew, Georgian with its Mtavruli capitals, Ethiopic, Thai, Lao, Khmer, Sinhala and the major Indian scripts from Devanagari and Bengali down to Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.
The feature list is deep too. Small caps with caps-to-small-caps, tabular and proportional figures, fractions, subscripts, contextual alternates and 9 stylistic sets.
For a product interface where lots of languages share 1 screen, we can’t think of an easier choice. For a novel it carries too much of a company voice.
