In Karmilla the apostrophe sits up at the height of the ascenders, so in l’ and d’ it lines up with the top of the letter before it. That is a French detail, and French is where the project began.
Karla, Jonathan Pinhorn’s grotesque, came out through Google Webfonts in 2012. Designers who wanted it for French found letters missing, and Karmilla, the project of Manuel Schmalstieg, Raphaël Bastide and other contributors on GitHub, was the workaround: ç and œ, guillemets, the euro sign, then ß for German, å, ø and æ for the Nordic languages, and the Slovak accents. The q was smoothed along the way.
In 2015 Pinhorn himself sent in Æ, ß, Ð, ð, Þ and þ, which completed Icelandic. That same year an ogonek and a breve were drawn by hand, so the font could build Ą, Ă and their relatives.
2 styles, Regular and Bold, both keeping Karla’s grotesque shapes. For a French portfolio or a small European studio site that wants Karla’s look and needs the accents, this is the version to use.
