Ibrahima and Abdoulaye Barry were teenage brothers when, around 1989, they came up with letters of its own for Fulani. Fulani, with some 65 million speakers, had until then been written in Latin or Arabic letters. Their script, Adlam, is now taught in Guinea, Nigeria, Liberia and other countries.
It reads right to left and has capital and small letters, 28 of them, each with 4 forms. Like Arabic and N’Ko the letters can join, and this Noto version is the joining, cursive kind, which suits most running text. An unjoined style also exists for headlines and teaching material, where each letter stands apart.
Mark Jamra and Neil Patel of JamraPatel drew it. The stroke is unmodulated, and there are 4 weights, Regular to Bold, with a Latin set alongside. Shaping support in the software takes care of the joins.
For a Fulani news page or a class handout, Regular for text and Bold for the heading would do.
