Vernon Adams took the old Alternate Gothic sans faces as his model for Oswald and reshaped their letters to sit cleanly on the pixel grid of an ordinary screen, so that any browser, on a desktop or a phone, could use it freely. The first release went out in 2011. He kept working on it until 2014, adding the Light and Bold, more Latin and Cyrillic languages, tighter spacing and kerning, and a long tail of small fixes that came from users writing in.
Kalapi Gajjar finished the Latin he had started, in 2016. Cyreal shares the credit, and a round of work in July 2023 brought a bigger Cyrillic set and cleaned up the math symbols.
You get 6 weights here, ExtraLight to Bold, and no italic at any of them.
Narrowness is what you take Oswald for. The same words need about 18.5% less width than Arial would give them, and a long headline that breaks in 2 elsewhere tends to fit on 1 line. That same squeeze turns a body paragraph into a fence of upright strokes, and with no italic you could not mark a word inside it anyway. Headlines and nav bars, then. The fractions and superscripts are there for a stats table if the page needs one.
