An advertising agency’s birthday present to itself. Special Group, a design and advertising studio, marked its 15th year by commissioning a typeface, and Alistair McCready drew it with them, going back to the gothic sans styles of the early 1900s for their raw, stubborn energy and rebuilding that for today.
This page holds the normal width, in Regular, Medium, Semi Bold and Bold. Special Gothic is a multi-width design, and the Condensed and Expanded live as separate families under their own names, so a layout can mix 3 widths of the same voice.
The kit goes further than 4 weights would suggest. Tabular and proportional figures, fractions, case-sensitive forms and a stylistic set are all in there, enough for an annual report as much as a billboard. I’d put the Bold on the billboard.
