Early 20th-century American geometric sans serifs are the root of Spartan, Matt Bailey’s design, and League Spartan is The League of Moveable Type’s reading of it. For years the League version was a single bold. Tyler Finck later opened it into a variable family, and the static files here run 9 steps, Thin 100 to Black 900.
The Bold was redrawn in that expansion. It keeps close to the old League Bold in shape, but its spacing moved slightly from version 1.000, so a logo set in the original may want its letter spacing checked after an update.
Small lowercase, tall capitals. That proportion more than anything is why it looks best in all-caps headlines, where the short x-height never shows.
- around 40 Latin-script languages, Turkish, Welsh, Swahili, Zulu and Vietnamese among them
- 2 stylistic sets and contextual alternates
- case sensitive forms that raise punctuation for lines in capitals
Google added the variable version in December 2021, crediting Bailey and Finck.
