The slanted styles in Cambay are obliques, and the Devanagari leans with the Latin.

Pooja Saxena, a type designer in Bangalore, drew Cambay as a Devanagari companion for Cantarell, a Latin sans, and the family Google added in 2015 carries both scripts in every file. For the obliques she tilted the upright letters and made only the optical corrections the slant forced on her. Nothing was redrawn as a cursive. Our slanted copy of a sentence runs exactly as long as the upright one.

That plainness has a use. In an interface where Hindi and English sit in the same line, you get emphasis in both scripts without a second design creeping in, and the Bold is there for headings. 4 styles in all: Regular, Bold and an oblique for each, 487 characters a file.

The project lives on GitHub, and Saxena invited contributions there.
