Herders move north in spring

Mongolian runs top to bottom. The script is written in vertical columns that move from left to right across the page, or in horizontal lines rotated from that, and it needs software shaping on top.

It grew out of Old Uyghur in the 13th century and is related to Galik, Todo, Manchu and Sibe. Today it writes Mongolian in Mongolia and Inner Mongolia, and it also serves Daur, Xibe and Manchu in China, Southern Altai and Kalmyk-Oirat in Russia, and Buriat in Mongolia.

Monotype’s design team drew Noto Sans Mongolian for Google’s Noto collection. It covers 224 characters from 6 Unicode blocks, Mongolian Supplement and the CJK compatibility forms among them, in a single Regular, with contextual alternates and localized forms in the OpenType set.
