Archivo started out as a headline face. Héctor Gatti and the Omnibus-Type team drew it for highlights and titles with the American grotesques of the late 1800s somewhere in mind, then kept at it until it could set text as well, in print and on screen at the same time, and in more than 200 languages.

By 2021 the family had gone variable, with a weight axis from Thin to Black and a width axis that stretches from ExtraCondensed to Expanded. The files offered on this page are the static, normal width set: 9 weights, an italic for each, 18 files.

The figure kit is what won us over. Old style or lining, tabular or proportional, a slashed zero, real fractions and ordinals, superscripts and subscripts. A quarterly report can run its tables in the Regular with tabular lining numbers, then put the headline over them in Black without leaving the family.

Its italics hold the same width as the romans.

We would rank it high for reports and dashboards and a notch lower for a novel, where the plain grotesque shapes start to feel a little like filling in a form.
