Until Unicode 16.0, Kirat Rai had no official place in the standard, and until this font it had no Unicode font family at all. The script is used to write Bantawa, a language of the Sikkim state of India, and in West Bengal people also call it Khambu Rai Lipi. Kanchenjunga is the font that fills that gap.
The name is a map. Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world, stands on the border between Sikkim and eastern Nepal, more or less over the area where Bantawa is spoken.
Becca Hirsbrunner Spalinger designed it at SIL International and based the letters loosely on the handwriting style of Kirat Rai that appeared in some of the early reading primers, so the type keeps a little of the hand those primers were written in.

Google added it in October 2024.
