Think of the screen on a graphing calculator from the late 1980s, or some other pocket gadget of that decade or the next. Stefan Schmidt took those cramped little displays as his reference and asked how little information a letter can carry and still be read, and look decent while it is at it. His answer has letters 5 pixels tall.
The widths are not fixed. An i takes less room than an m, the way it would in ordinary type, and that is the main reason a sentence in Tiny5 reads like text and less like a readout.
For a font this small the character set is wide: Latin with the African extensions, Greek, and Cyrillic in the core and extended sets. Schmidt built it with Bits’n’Picas, Kreative Software’s bitmap font tool, and there is 1 Regular style. Set it at whole multiples of its pixel grid, or the squares will blur at the edges.
