4 hours in July 1999. That is how long Ben Weiner says it took to substantially finish Geo, after someone showed him squared-off lettering on a record label and asked for something similar.
The lineage he gives is a long one. Theo van Doesburg and Herbert Bayer drew experimental geometric faces in the 1920s; Neville Brody’s designs echoed them in the 1980s and are now read as an expression of that decade’s consumer culture; in the 1990s Emigre, the magazine and font catalog, was where computer fonts with the look turned up. Weiner, candidly, thinks Geo carries both the directness of the 1920s faces and the “rather disingenuous consumerist thrust” of their later descendants.
Regular and Italic, basic Latin, 204 characters, no OpenType features. A record sleeve or a club flyer would suit it.
