Only the verticals get heavier. Go from Regular to Black in Sarpanch and the horizontal strokes keep the same thickness the whole way, while the uprights fatten, so the Regular is close to monoline and the Black ends up with a fierce contrast between its slab-like stems and its thin crossbars. That includes the shirorekha, the headline that runs along the top of Devanagari words, which stays slim even when the letters below it have gone heavy.

Indian Type Foundry built it in 2014 on a squared, wide construction. Jyotish Sonowal designed the Regular and Manushi Parikh the Medium through Black; she drew the Latin as well.

ITF had something specific in mind: big sizes and pixel sizes, a television news ticker, a “breaking news” strap. The foundry’s own advice splits the 6 weights in 2. Regular, Medium and Semi Bold can carry a short headline. Bold, Extra Bold and Black are for a single word or a pair of them, and we would follow that, because a whole Hindi sentence in Black turns into a row of dark bars.

Sarpanch is the Hindi word for the head of a village.
