Noto Sans Arabic takes the swing between thick and thin out of the Arabic stroke. It is the unmodulated, sans serif Arabic in Google’s Noto collection, drawn by the Monotype design team with Nadine Chahine and Nizar Qandah, and Khaled Hosny is credited as well.
That plainness matters because of how much ground the script covers. Arabic is an abjad written right to left, among the 3 most used scripts in the world with about 660 million users, in use for the Arabic language since the 4th century. Its 28 basic letters are extended with extra ones for other languages, among them:
- Persian and Urdu
- Pashto, Kurdish, Uyghur and Sindhi
- Kashmiri and Balochi
- Somali and Mandinka
Short vowels are optional marks above and below the line, so a font for all of these has to handle a lot of combinations, and the shaping itself needs software with complex text layout support.
9 weights, Thin to Black. Tabular figures line up numbers in a price list or a timetable, and Latin comes along in the same files. For an app or a website that has to serve readers of Arabic and Urdu alike in 1 family, this is where we would start; for a book of poetry, a modulated Naskh would sit better with most readers.
