Syne gets wider as it gets heavier. The Regular is a fairly archetypal geometric sans, practical enough for the art center’s daily use, but by Extra Bold the letters have spread out so far that a headline forces a real design decision about where it goes. That was intended.
The family was made in 2017 for Synesthésie, an art center in Saint-Denis, a suburb of Paris, whose idea is to bring different artistic personalities together and see what happens. Bonjour Monde turned that into a type concept, odd pairings of weights and styles, and Lucas Descroix drew it with help from Arman Mohtadji. It has 2 more relatives, Syne Mono and Syne Tactile.
What you can download here: 5 weights, Regular at 400 to Extra Bold at 800, upright only, 470 characters. George Triantafyllakos added a Greek alphabet in March 2022. The OpenType set has 5 stylistic sets, discretionary ligatures and both old style and tabular figures.
For a gallery’s posters or a festival identity we’d reach for it early. In running text we’d stay in the Regular and Medium, where the width is still sane.
