Before Rubik had its 5 weights, it had this one. Rubik One is the first version of the family’s Black roman, drawn by Philipp Hubert and Sebastian Fischer at Hubert & Fischer for the Chrome Cube Lab project, and Google Fonts added it in May 2014 with a monospaced twin, Rubik Mono One, beside it.
The corners are rounded off slightly. Not enough to call it a rounded font, enough that all that black reads friendly where a square-cut heavy sans would read harsh. The letters are wide too, and a line in Rubik One takes about a quarter more room than the same words in Arial.
559 characters, Latin with the extended accents plus Cyrillic, in 1 Regular.
We would keep it big: a 3 word headline or the title card of a puzzle game. At small sizes a weight this dark closes up, and the later Rubik family has lighter weights for that.
