Mike Abbink at IBM and the studio Bold Monday built Plex as a neutral grotesque carrying a few engineered details, IBM’s own type for its long-running theme of people and machines. Plex grew into a Sans, a Sans Condensed, a Mono and a Serif, and the Sans spread across Arabic, Cyrillic, Devanagari, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Thai and Korean.
This is the Korean. Sandoll produced the files, with Wujin Sim, Chorong Kim and Dohee Lee in the credits beside Abbink, Paul van der Laan and Pieter van Rosmalen. The result runs to 12,224 characters, a heavy download by font standards, and the Plex Latin rides along so English and Hangul match weight for weight.
7 weights, Thin to Bold, no italics. There is a slashed zero, 4 stylistic sets, and a run of circled letters, ⓐ to ⓩ and Ⓐ to Ⓩ, handy for labeling the options in a form or a quiz.
For body copy on screen we would pick Regular or Medium. Save Thin for a title slide.
