Vernon Adams first drew Mulish in 2011 and kept at it until 2014, adding weights and Latin languages, tightening the spacing and kerning and refining glyphs all through the family, much of it driven by feedback from the people using it. He did not get to finish. After his death, Jacques Le Bailly completed the family in 2017, working with Adams’s wife Allison, an artist who holds the trademark on the name. A variable weight axis followed in August 2019.
The result is a minimal sans meant for both display and text, and the family on this page is a full one: 8 weights from Extra Light to Black, each with an italic, Cyrillic and Vietnamese next to Latin.
A practical detail. The italics take exactly the same width as the uprights, so switching a word to italic in the middle of a paragraph will not push the line breaks around. Handy in an interface where text is fitted to a box.
For body copy on screen, Regular or Medium. Extra Light at a large size makes a quiet headline; Black is loud.
