Komi texts west of the Urals

St. Stephen of Perm made this alphabet for the Komi people west of the Ural mountains, and it was in use from the 14th to the 17th century before Cyrillic slowly pushed it out. Old Permic, or Abur, had 34 letters, and to a modern eye they look like cousins of Greek and Cyrillic letters.

Noto Sans Old Permic, by the Monotype Design Team for Google’s Noto project, encodes 55 characters across the Old Permic block and the combining marks, in 1 Regular weight. A Latin set comes along for the surrounding text.

Komi still has around 300,000 speakers today, though they write it in Cyrillic, so this font is for the history books.
