Saira is the middle of a range of widths. Hector Gatti designed it with the Omnibus-Type team as a system, and the Normal family on this page sits beside Saira Semi Condensed, Saira Condensed and Saira Extra Condensed, each with its own 9 weights. In 2020 the project went variable, with axes for weight and width, and picked up expanded widths on the way.
So the question is which width you need. The Normal suits interfaces and running text where nothing has to be squeezed. Pick a condensed sibling when a scoreboard or a table runs out of room, and you keep the same letter shapes.
Here you get Thin at 100 through Black at 900, every weight with an italic, 18 styles. The figures come in 4 forms, old style or lining, each proportional or tabular, and there is a slashed zero, handy for lap times or a spec sheet. 2 stylistic sets and Vietnamese support round it off.
The Thin and Extra Light look good large on a dark background. Under 14 px I wouldn’t go below Regular.
